My name is Billy Penfold. I would like to introduce a new Thai cultural attraction recently opened in Chiang Mai. It is called the Cockfighting Learning and Exhibition Centre

My business partner, Mr Surachat Raksuk, and I have recently built this new cultural attraction in Chiang Mai. I will briefly explain our background before giving details on the new centre:

Mr Surachat Raksuk is a 4th generation bird breeder from a small village 12km north of Chiang Mai. He speaks English well and has been a tourist guide in Northern Thailand for 15 years. Over the last 5 years I have been working with Surachat in the tourism industry. During this time he explained all about bird breeding and cockfighting in Thailand.

I found learning about all aspects of cockfighting in Thailand very fascinating. Cockfighting has a long history and the use of traditional medicine and specialist training developed over hundreds of years is very scientific and interesting. I found that cockfighting is a large (and legal) industry with strong cultural ties in Thailand, specifically rural Thailand. With this in mind we decided two years ago to build a learning centre to teach people all about bird breeding, cockfight training, traditional medicines, and cockfighting in Thailand.

To get to the site:
Drive 10km north of the Chiang Mai Citadel. Heading towards Mae Rim
When you get to the intersection of the 3rd ring road , turn right on the 3rd ring road, then follow the signs about 1.5km away.
The site is amongst rural farms and vegetable/flower plots. It is nice and peaceful. The centre is about 40 meters inland from the Ping River. The drive is about 35 minutes north from the Chiang Mai Citadel. Our brochure has a detailed map on the back.

Transport:
There are no public buses to the centre as it's about 5 roads off the main road.
Giving the map to a long taxi or taxi or tuk tuk they can follow the map easy. Several of the local tour companies are adding it to their daily program, as is a bicycle tour company and one of the Ping River boat cruises.

As it's on the main road to Mae Rim, not far from the Orchid Farm, Monkey Farm and the same direction as the elephants many people combine the trip to our cockfighting learning centre as a day tour.

Entry Fee:
The entry fee is 300 baht.

Opening Times:
Are from 9am – 5:30pm daily. Exhibition fight shows times will be held hourly or on demand. If a large group want to make a private booking or book an exact time for the exhibition fights they can.


Guides:
There is an expert guide at the centre; he knows everything about all aspects of cockfighting. He is available for groups, no tips needed.

The first room you enter is Exhibition Hall; it has 8 display boards with lots of information.  No guide needed for this part although he will be available.

The next room is a DVD room; the DVD has text explanations at the bottom of the screen. The DVD focus on a real cockfight venue in Chiang Mai to show what the atmosphere is like, the activities that take place there and the medicines and crowd attendance. You push a red button to activate the 9 minute film about cockfighting.

The next area is the garden and nice comfortable bird cages; everything in this area has labels on it explaining the plants and the types of birds.

The next area is the fan cooled exhibition area/ring (or cockpit in cockfighting terms). This is a 4 tier seated area where exhibition fights are held. The guide gives commentary and explains the different birds, the different fight styles and other information with a microphone. We usually have 3 different short exhibition fights to shoe the different style of the Thai/Burmese and Vietnamese birds.

The next section is the photos/prints walls; here we have many historic photos of cockfighting dating back 200 years from around the world, including General in the American Civil War enjoying cockfighting, also rare news paper articles from 200 years ago from USA, France, Cuba, Philippines etc. One of the walls is dedicated to showing old photos (100 yrs old) of rural Chiang Mai.

There is a cafe area and a nice garden with rural farm implements. (The farm theme is because cockfighting is mainly enjoyed by farmers so I hade the whole centre build farm style, thatched rooves, lovely plants, old ox cart, plough, etc.....

There is one other training area where a guide explains how we teach the birds to jump, swim, fight, etc.

Our Birds
We have about 10 birds in the centre for display only. These 10 birds don't fight. They are only to show the different types of birds.
Out the back of the centre we have over 40 birds that we rotate. And at another location we have another 30 birds. So in total about 80 birds, of which 70 we use occasionally for exhibition fights. We rotate the birds often. All our birds live in comfortable individual cages. The birds are all treated well; actually they live like a VIP bird or a King!

Health:
Onsite we have a bird breeder and 2 bird handlers who look after the birds constantly. They wear a yellow top and blue baggy pants uniform.
We are certified by the Dept of Livestock. The Department ensures the birds are houses safely and adequately, and are well looked after. The Department of Livestock visits one a month randomly. We also need by law to have disinfectant foot trays when entering the site to prevent people from bringing in diseases (such as bird flu), we have this. There were a lot of stringent laws introduced after bird flu in 2003 so we have to abide by them.

Each bird even has its own Photo ID Passport every bird on our site needs to be registered with the Department of livestock.
We also have onsite a first aid kit, fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, 6 or 8 security monitors and night sensor lights. A night security man also sleeps on site.

Our exhibition cock fights only last a few minutes each and the birds do not use metal spurs as that is illegal in Thailand. To make the fights safe we put leg pads on the birds to hide the natural spur on the back of the legs of the birds to prevent injuries. Our exhibition fights are not to cause injury but simply to show the different fighting styles and techniques only. There is no gambling on the exhibition fights and the birds are no injured. We usually have 3 five minute exhibition fights. Each of the 3 fights pits two different breeds of birds against each other in order to show the different types of fighting techniques.

Other facilities
There is plenty of space for car parking. We have a fridge for drinks, freezer for ice creams and chocolate and other snacks. The cafe and other areas have plenty of ceiling fans, western style clean toilets with toilet paper! We have just added free wireless internet to the site this week. So people can sit at our café and check on their emails, internet (if they bring their own laptop)


The Focus of the Centre
The focus of the centre is not to show violent cockfights. The centre's aim is to:

•   Educate people about the history and the culture of cockfighting, with a Thai focus
•   Educate people about the traditional training and breeding methods and traditional medicines developed over hundreds of years in Thailand
•   Educate people about the rules, legalities and myths of cockfighting in Thailand
•   Show exhibition cock fights to teach people the different fight techniques and tactics used by each breed of bird
•   Present the cockfighting in a rural setting with traditional style buildings, as would be used by local farmers who take part in the cock fight industry.
•   Also show historic photos of rural Chiang Mai to show what rural Chiang Mai used to look like compared to today. Show historic cockfighting pictures collected from all over the world  (So the Thai's can see other countries that enjoy cockfighting)
•   Show traditional farm implements and antiques dating back hundreds of years.
•   Present all of the above in a safe, cultural, historic, legal, professional and non offensive manner.



I hope you will consider adding the Cockfighting Learning and Exhibition Centre to your website or a feature story on the place. Perhaps one day you can visit our centre in person. It is a genuine and unique centre. Probably the ONLY ONE OF ITS TYPE IN THE WORLD. Something Thailand should be proud about.
